The Summerhouse Story
New Life for a Wonderful Old Building
You are sitting in a 1920’s carriage barn built by Dr. Preston,
a physician who served the citizens of Montrose from his office
on South Main Street.
By 2006, the building was ready for new life.
Many loving hands pitched in to bring the dream of Summerhouse
to life. A wonderful post and beam interior opened up the space
and provided a great backdrop for displaying local art. Green
building products were utilized and green practices put into
place to minimize our environmental impact.
A Stupendous Idea
Thinking back to that first summer in
2006, what a wonderful idea was
hatched in the minds of founding owners, Marilyn Anthony and
Matt
Severson - as well as the many friends who pitched in to bring a
stupendous idea to life: Fresh. Local. Real. described
the food and the farmers,
the art and the artists, the dining experience and the diners -
all gathered
at Summerhouse in celebration of local culture.
The doors
opened for the first time in June 2006, with many excited diners
enjoying the bounty of locally-raised foods. And
with lots of dedication, the idea worked! Local, sustainable,
humane, and delicious food is still the cornerstone and heart of
who we are... and local art exhibits by The Butternut Gallery
hang on the walls. In the four years since, the most sensational people
have been a part of Summerhouse's growth. Those who farmed the
fields to grow the food, those who prepared and served the food,
those who supported local food by coming here - each person has
added their touch,
and has played their part of the foundation
of this awesome little gem.
Summerhouse is now a year-round restaurant, grateful to each of
you for supporting local food – delicious, healthy, and great
for our regional communities. Thanks for being here… we truly
enjoy seeing and serving you.
Best of all, your visit here
supports local farm families
- since we receive directly from them beautiful produce, meats,
eggs, and cheeses – all sustainably and humanely raised.
We hope to see you again
soon!
